Choosing a vacation rental in Costa Rica is not only about finding a beautiful property.

Location can completely change the way you experience your stay.

In Playa Potrero, two homes that appear close to each other on a map can offer very different experiences. One might put restaurants and everyday conveniences within easy reach. Another might give you a quieter setting closer to the beach. A few minutes away, Playa Flamingo offers yet another atmosphere.

So before choosing the property, it helps to choose the experience you want.

Here is how we look at the different areas around Playa Potrero.

First, Understand Playa Potrero

Playa Potrero sits on Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast in Guanacaste, next to Playa Flamingo and within easy reach of several of the area’s best-known beaches.

But Potrero is not a traditional resort town built around one central tourist strip.

It feels more residential, relaxed and spread out. Vacation homes, local businesses, restaurants and small hotels are mixed into the community, while the beach remains an important part of everyday life.

That is part of Potrero’s appeal.

It also means that checking the exact location of your accommodation matters more than simply seeing “Playa Potrero” in the listing.

Surfside: For Convenience and Everyday Life

At the southern end of the Potrero area is Surfside.

For many travelers, it offers one of the easiest combinations of vacation rental living and everyday convenience.

Restaurants, cafés and local services are nearby, while Playa Potrero and neighboring Playa Flamingo remain easy to reach.

Surfside works particularly well if you like the idea of starting the morning slowly, having places to eat nearby and returning to a residential setting rather than a large resort.

It can also be a practical base for longer stays because everyday necessities are relatively close.

For families, couples and travelers who want to feel part of the local area rather than isolated from it, Surfside deserves serious consideration.

Near Playa Potrero: For a Slower Beach Rhythm

If the beach is the reason you came to Costa Rica, staying closer to Playa Potrero itself can make sense.

The atmosphere here is relaxed. Rather than planning an entire beach day, being nearby means you can simply go when you feel like it — an early walk, a few hours by the water or sunset at the end of the day.

This part of the area generally suits travelers looking for a quieter pace and a more traditional coastal experience.

But there is one detail worth checking before booking.

“Near the beach” can mean different things from one property to another.

Look at the actual location, walking distance and road access rather than relying only on the destination name in the listing.

Potrero or Flamingo?

This is one of the most useful questions to ask before choosing where to stay.

The two areas are neighbors, but they offer different experiences.

Playa Potrero generally feels quieter and more residential. Playa Flamingo has a more developed tourism environment and is home to Marina Flamingo, making it particularly convenient for travelers planning fishing, sailing or other ocean activities.

Neither is automatically better.

If you prefer a relaxed home base and want to explore the surrounding coast, Potrero may suit you better.

If marina access and a more developed tourism setting are priorities, Flamingo may be the better fit.

And because they are so close, staying in one does not mean missing the other.

What Should You Look for in a Vacation Rental?

Once you have chosen the area, then look at the property.

In Guanacaste, we would pay particular attention to:

  • Reliable air conditioning

  • Wi-Fi

  • Kitchen facilities

  • Parking

  • Pool or outdoor areas

  • Distance from restaurants and everyday services

  • Actual distance from the beach

  • Local assistance if something goes wrong

A beautiful photograph can get your attention.

But these are often the details that determine how comfortable the stay actually feels.

For longer stays especially, having a kitchen, comfortable living space and access to everyday services can become just as important as being close to the ocean.

Getting Around Matters More Than You Think

One of the easiest mistakes when planning a trip to Guanacaste is looking at distance only on a map.

A destination that appears very close may not always be somewhere you want to walk in the midday heat, carrying groceries or returning after dinner.

Your accommodation and transportation plan should therefore work together.

Depending on where you stay and what you want to explore, you might combine walking with local transportation, a golf cart or car for greater independence, and private transfers for longer journeys.

This becomes especially useful if you plan to explore beyond Potrero.

Playa Flamingo, Brasilito, Playa Conchal and other beaches along the coast can all become part of the same trip when you have the freedom to move around.

Don’t Choose Only a Property. Choose Your Base.

This is probably the most important advice we can give.

When travelers search for vacation rentals, it is natural to compare bedrooms, pools, kitchens and prices.

But your accommodation is also your base for experiencing Costa Rica.

Ask yourself:

  • Do we want to walk somewhere for breakfast?

  • Do we want the beach to be part of every day?

  • Will we cook at home?

  • Do we want to explore different beaches?

  • Are we looking for quiet evenings or easy access to more activity?

The right answer will tell you much more about where to stay than the number of stars beside a property listing.

Experience Potrero Your Way

At Nomadly, we believe a stay should work around the way you want to experience the destination.

That is why we look beyond accommodation itself.

A comfortable property matters. But so does knowing how to move around, what to experience nearby and having local support when you need it.

Our stays in Guanacaste are part of that larger approach.

Stay. Move. Experience.
