One of the most practical questions to ask before staying in Playa Potrero is also one of the easiest to overlook:
Do you actually need a car?
The answer depends much more on where you’re staying and what you want to do than on Potrero itself.
Some parts of the area make it easy to walk to restaurants, cafés and the beach. But Playa Potrero is also a great base for exploring a much larger stretch of Guanacaste — and once you start adding nearby beaches, Playa Flamingo, Brasilito, Playa Conchal or day trips to your plans, transportation becomes more important.
So before automatically booking a rental car — or deciding you don’t need one — here’s what getting around Playa Potrero is actually like.
Is Playa Potrero Walkable?
Parts of it definitely are.
The Surfside area is particularly convenient if you like having restaurants, cafés, small shops and everyday services relatively close to where you’re staying.
Recent local guides also describe Surfside and central Potrero as the area’s most walkable core, with dining, coffee, beach access and services concentrated within a relatively compact area.
If your idea of a vacation is waking up, walking for coffee, spending time at the beach and going somewhere nearby for dinner, choosing the right location can reduce how often you need transportation.
That’s one reason where you stay in Potrero matters as much as the property itself.
We’ve explained the differences between the main areas in our guide to where to stay in Playa Potrero
But there is an important distinction:
Being able to walk around your neighborhood is not the same as being able to explore Guanacaste without transportation.
When Can You Stay in Potrero Without a Car?
You can absolutely build a Playa Potrero vacation without renting a car.
It works particularly well if you:
stay in a walkable part of Potrero or Surfside;
plan to spend most of your time locally;
arrange transportation for airport arrival and departure;
don’t mind using taxis or private transfers when you want to travel farther;
organize excursions that include transportation or pickup when available.
In that kind of trip, having a car sitting outside your accommodation every day may simply not be necessary.
This is especially true for travelers who want a slower vacation rather than trying to visit a different part of Guanacaste every day.
You can explore our stays in Playa Potrero to see where your accommodation is located before deciding what kind of transportation makes sense.
When Does Having Your Own Transportation Make Sense?
The equation changes quickly if exploring is part of the trip.
Potrero is surrounded by places worth visiting.
Playa Penca and Playa Prieta are just north of town. Flamingo is nearby in the other direction. Brasilito and Playa Conchal extend the coastline farther south, while Las Catalinas and Playa Danta offer another very different coastal experience to the north.
That’s one of Potrero’s greatest advantages as a base.
You don’t have to move accommodation every few days to experience different parts of this coast but you do need a practical way to reach them.
If you want the freedom to leave early, change beaches during the day, stop somewhere unexpectedly or come home whenever you feel like it, independent transportation becomes much more useful.
What About Golf Carts?
Golf carts are a familiar sight around the Potrero and Flamingo area, and for the right kind of local trip they can be very convenient.
They are particularly useful for shorter movements around the immediate area — going to the beach, heading to a nearby restaurant or moving between locations relatively close to your accommodation, but a golf cart should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a car for every itinerary.
Distance, road conditions and the places you plan to visit matter.
If your vacation is centered primarily around Potrero and nearby areas, a golf cart may fit the way you want to travel.
If your plans involve longer distances or extensive exploration across Guanacaste, a car or organized transportation may make more sense.
The important thing is to choose transportation based on your actual itinerary, rather than simply renting what everyone else appears to be using.
Playa Potrero and Playa Flamingo
This is one of the most common local movements.
Potrero and Flamingo are neighboring coastal communities, but they offer different experiences.
Flamingo adds another beach, restaurants and the marina area, while Potrero and Surfside have their own concentration of casual dining and local services. Current destination guides place the two communities only a short drive apart.
That makes Flamingo easy to include while staying in Potrero.
You might spend the morning near your accommodation, head toward Flamingo later in the day and return to Potrero for dinner or do exactly the opposite.
This ability to move between nearby communities is one of the reasons we see Potrero less as an isolated destination and more as a base for experiencing this part of Guanacaste.
What About Playa Penca, Prieta and the Beaches North of Potrero?
Another advantage of having flexible transportation is beach hopping.
The coastline north of Potrero changes quickly.
Playa Penca offers a smaller cove with light sand and generally calmer swimming conditions, while nearby beaches each have their own character. Current local beach guides identify Penca, Prieta, Danta and Dantita among the beaches accessible around the Potrero area.
You don’t necessarily need to plan an entire day around one beach.
A morning somewhere new, lunch back in Potrero and sunset somewhere else can be enough.
That flexibility is one of the best reasons to think about transportation before you arrive rather than after.
Airport Transfers: Plan This Before You Land
Getting around during your stay is one question.
Getting to Potrero with luggage after a flight is another.
For most international travelers arriving through Guanacaste Airport near Liberia, the simplest options are generally a pre-arranged private transfer, authorized transportation or picking up a rental vehicle as part of the arrival plan.
Current transportation guidance for Playa Potrero recommends confirming ground transportation and pickup details before traveling because routes, road conditions, traffic and seasonal demand can change.
This is one part of the trip we would not leave until arrival.
Once you know where you’re staying, organize the first journey.
Everything after that becomes easier.
Don’t Let Transportation Dictate Your Vacation
There is another side to this.
You don’t need to spend your entire vacation driving around Guanacaste simply because there are many places to visit.
Potrero works particularly well when you combine local days with exploration days.
One day might be nothing more complicated than breakfast, beach, lunch, pool and sunset.
Another might involve leaving Potrero to explore the coast or joining one of the experiences available around Guanacaste
That balance is often better than trying to turn every day into a road trip.

So, Do You Need a Car in Playa Potrero?
Not necessarily.
If you choose a well-located stay, plan to spend most of your vacation around Potrero and organize transportation when you need it, you can enjoy the area without having a rental car every day.
But if your idea of Costa Rica includes exploring beaches, moving freely between coastal towns and changing plans whenever something catches your attention, having independent transportation gives you considerably more flexibility.
The better question isn’t:
“Do I need a car in Playa Potrero?”
It’s:
“How do I want to experience Playa Potrero?”
Start with your accommodation, think about the places you actually want to visit, and choose your transportation around that.
You can browse our Playa Potrero stays and start building the trip from there.
Because in this part of Guanacaste, where you stay matters but so does how freely you can explore what’s around you.
